Tough call–plant or wait

Farmers are faced with a tough decision. With cold and wet weather in the forecast, do you keep planting or wait for warmer and drier conditions?

Larry Klever, who farms in west-central Iowa near Audubon, decided to keep going.

“I started a little over a week ago and I’m still planting today (Wednesday) in the face of the cold weather,” Klever says. “It’s kind of risky and I’m not sure of the results. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.”

Klever says there’s also risk involved in waiting.

“This is my 41st year of putting a crop in the ground and I’ve had to do a lot of planting in June because rain kept me out of the field,” he says. “So I guess when the soil is dry and there’s not any wet spots or anything, it’s just hard to resist.”

As of midday Wednesday, Klever was halfway finished with his corn planting.
