Some surprises on day 2 of Midwest Crop Tour

The Midwest Crop Tour encountered some surprises as observers moved deeper into the Heartland Tuesday.

After finding extreme variability in corn and soybean fields on the east and west edges of the Corn Belt on day one, reports of better-than-expected yield potential were common in Nebraska.

Corn samples resulted in average yields of 165 bushels per acre, up four percent compared to last year’s tour.

Soybean pod counts were said to be slightly lower than 2016.

Major challenges throughout the growing season in Indiana led to corn yields fluctuating from 120 to nearly 240 bushels per acre within a 10 mile radius, with a statewide yield projection just over 170.

Soybeans along the Indiana route were said to be a bit disappointing, but pod counts are above the three year average.

The Midwest Crop Tour continues in Illinois and Iowa today.
