Supporting troops with homegrown fuels

In 2015, CountryMark’s Fueling Freedom raised over $54,000 for the National Guard’s Family Readiness Group.

An Indiana cooperative is supporting the state’s National Guard units with sales of homegrown fuels.

Jon Lantz with CountryMark says the company’s Fueling Freedom event started eight years ago at 3 locations.  “It started with one of our member coops saying wouldn’t it be nice to be able to do something where we could, around the 4th of July holiday, honor our military,” he says.  “And make a tie between the military, rural America, and 100 percent all-American CountryMark fuels.”

This year 43 member stations will participate.

He tells Brownfield fifty cents from every gallon of gasoline or diesel fuel sold will benefit local National Guard Family Readiness Groups, which help support the families of troops when soldiers are deployed.  “Each National Guard unit has their own group and that group looks at the needs of what the Guard unit is,” he says.  “It may be anything from after-school programs for the kids and it may be sending care packages or thinking-about-you packages to the soldiers that are deployed.”

Last year the event raised more than $54,000 for the Family Readiness Groups.

This year’s Fueling Freedom event takes place June 24 between noon and 5 pm at participating CountryMark fueling stations.
