Still need to scout for insects

Andy Michel, Extension entomologist at the Ohio State University says while insect activity this growing season has been slowed by the hot, dry weather, it’s still important to be out in the fields scouting.

“Especially soybeans, there’s still a lot of potential for that crop and at this stage while we hope and pray for rain we need to do as much as we can to try and protect the crop,” said Michel. “We don’t want to be in the situation where all of our soybeans are defoliated and we get timely rains and they’re not going to have the leaf area to bring on new growth, the same thing with spider mites, we need to scout the fields and treat early, you might not see a lot of insects, but there’s still some potential left in this growing season even though we have a drought situation.”
