Steenhoek encouraged by Trump’s attention to transportation infrastructure

The Soy Transportation Coalition executive director says the inland waterway transportation system got a boost from the president’s speech in Ohio Wednesday.

“I also appreciated the president in his remarks actually call attention to the reliance that agriculture has on this system, and therefore the need to invest in it,” said Mike Steenhoek, in an interview with Brownfield Ag New Thursday.

Steenhoek was among those invited to Trump’s appearance on the bank of the Ohio River in Cincinnati, delivering what Steenhoek says is the administration’s initial volley to generate momentum on infrastructure.  Steenhoek tells Brownfield it’s not clear how the plan will be funded.

“It’s still quite long on ambition, short on specifics, but we can work with that,” said Steenhoek.  “We can help supply the things that we’ve learned and the perspective that we have to try to make sure we’ve got a system that works for us.”

In his speech Wednesday, among other things, President Trump pushed for overhauling the nation’s aging waterway transportation system.
