South Dakota spring wheat in tough shape

It’s still hot and dry across South Dakota with crop conditions continuing to decline. Topsoil moisture is only 21 percent adequate to surplus.

Just 7 percent of the winter wheat is in good condition; none of it is excellent.  Fourteen percent of the crop is harvested.

Spring wheat is 10 percent good to excellent, but 72 percent of South Dakota spring wheat is poor to very poor.

Corn is 37 percent good to excellent and just starting to pollinate.

Soybeans are 34 percent good to excellent with 29 percent blooming.

Eighty percent of South Dakota’s alfalfa is poor to very poor and just eight percent good to excellent. About a third of the second cutting is done.

Pastures are 14 percent good to excellent.
