Smithfield’s group housing conversion at 82%

The world’s largest pork producer is making progress transitioning pregnant sows to group housing.

Smithfield Foods is reporting that at the end of 2015, nearly 82 percent of its company owned farms had transitioned to group housing, a 10 percent increase from 2014.

Smithfield says it will spend about $360 million for the conversion on all its company-owned farms.

The company expects the conversion to group housing which began in 2007, to be completed by 2017.
