Smithfield introduces ‘antibiotic-free’ pork products
Smithfield Foods is introducing a new line of what it calls “antibiotic-free fresh pork products” under its Pure Farms brand.
The products, which will be available in both retail stores and food service, include fresh pork cuts, ham cuts and packaged pork cuts including breakfast sausage and bacon.
The company says the launch is part of its commitment to provide a broader range of products to meet a variety of customer needs and preferences.
Editor’s note: “Antibiotic-free” is the term used by Smithfield in its news release. Some in the industry would argue that “raised without the use of antibiotics” or “no antibiotics ever” are more accurate terms. According to the American Meat Institute, government regulations “include a specified withdrawal time for each antibiotic used to ensure that the animal’s system has been sufficiently cleared of antibiotics well before its meat enters the food supply”.
I stopped buying Smithfield products when it was bought by China!
