Smithfield Foods, the world’s largest pork processor, announced its chief executive officer Larry Pope will retire at the end of the year. The company says Kenneth Sullivan, current president and chief operating officer, will succeed Pope as CEO.

In a release from Smithfield, Pope says the planned leadership transition comes at a time of strength and growth for Smithfield.  He says the company has unified and created a stronger more efficient company that can better support its people, brands, and customers.

Sullivan has served Smithfield in various positions including chief financial officer prior to his current role, vice president of finance, and chief accounting officer.  Pope says the transition should be orderly and seamless and Sullivan is the ideal person to serve as the company’s next CEO.

Pope’s retirement goes into effect December 31, 2015 following 35 years of service.
