Silage harvest slow to begin in Minnesota
Corn silage harvest is slow to begin in Minnesota.
Farm management analyst Kent Thiesse, based in Lake Crystal, says he’s not aware of much chopping, yet.
“I think we’re a little early (for that). We’ve slowed the development down a little bit (because of late planting), and getting some rain means it’s going to continue the vegetative growth a little longer. So I’m guessing it will be 10 days to two weeks before we start seeing much of that.”
He tells Brownfield neighboring regions with dryer conditions have probably started harvesting.
“As you get out into North and South Dakota, even parts of northwest Iowa where they’ve been a little drier, they’re probably starting to do some where they haven’t had as much rainfall.”
Thiesse says crop development is generally behind average in Minnesota, and there are concerns of an early frost.
