Signs point to an increase in domestic demand

A livestock market analyst says the most recent unemployment data is a good sign that domestic demand will continue to strengthen.

Scott Brown is with the University of Missouri.   “When you look at the unemployment rate 4.4% – the lowest level since May 2007 and we added a lot of jobs this month,” he says.  “All of that tells me that you’re going to take all consumers and have an opportunity to buy up.  When I say that – I think buy more high quality meant in both beef and pork.”

He tells Brownfield a stronger economy means an increase in consumer confidence.  “The idea that I might go out and consume more products at restaurants,” he says.  “Those tend to be some of our higher valued products.  That’s good news when we have the growth in meat supplies that we do in 2017.”

And as the grilling season gets underway, Brown says domestic demand will likely see a seasonal bump.
