Side dressing gaining popularity in Wisconsin
An agronomist in central and northern Wisconsin says more farmers are side-dressing corn this year.
Mike Weiss with DEKALB tells Brownfield growers are recognizing the benefits of putting nitrogen on when the plants need it.
“Spoon-feed it if you will is a wise choice. It lets you put the resources out when the plant needs it, and why put all your nitrogen out at the front end if we get something that happens? Then we lose that investment.”
He says growers in the Rice lake area concerned about nutrient loss due to heavy rains are turning to side-dress applications to mitigate those losses.
Weiss describes overall corn conditions in his territory as very good as of the end of June.
