Senators weigh in on point of obligation issue

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley

Two Midwestern senators have drafted a letter urging President Trump to keep the point of obligation requirement in the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) as is.

Iowa’s Chuck Grassley and Minnesota’s Amy Klobuchar are leading the effort. Grassley says they want to remind Trump of his commitment to support the RFS.

“The President committed to supporting the RFS. He should hear the strong case for keeping the RFS as it is,” Grassley says. “I hope that this is behind us.  The point of obligation hasn’t changed, and it shouldn’t change.  We obviously have to fight to hold our ground.”

Grassley says he had a conversation with a “high level person” at the White House who assured him that no executive order changing the point of obligation is imminent.

Grassley says shifting the responsibility for compliance from refiners to blenders would be a burden to fuel retailers and potentially discourage the use of renewable fuel.
