Senate expected to confirm FDA and USTR heads

This week the U.S. Senate will hold confirmation hearings for President Trump’s picks to lead the Food and Drug Administration and to serve as the U.S. trade representative.

The Senate’s Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee voted in favor of physician Scott Gottlieb to serve as the FDA commissioner Thursday and a cloture vote by the full Senate is expected Monday night.  Gottlieb is supported by food and beverage trade groups.

Senate approval of Robert Lighthizer, the deputy trade representative under former President Ronald Reagan, is expected later this week.

Thursday, the Senate Ag Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing on the reauthorization of the Pesticide Registration Improvement Act which is set to expire in September.
