Senate Ag Committee advances Perdue nomination

The Senate Agriculture Committee has voted to advance the nomination of former Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue as Secretary of Agriculture.

Chairman Pat Roberts says he’s pleased with the swift strides made to move the confirmation towards the finish line, acknowledging that farmers have waited too long for this important position to be filled.

The full Senate will now consider the nomination, although it remains unclear when that vote will occur.

Only one member of the Ag Committee voted against Perdue, New York Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand.

She claims his record on food stamps is “quite poor.”

Perdue has bipartisan support from six past Ag Secretaries, and more than 650 ag groups from across the nation.
