Senate Ag Chair says quick work planned for trade agreements

Senate Ag Chair Pat Roberts says the administration has indicated it plans to work quickly to put new bilateral trade agreements in place.

Roberts told attendees of the US Meat Export Federation’s spring conference US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer has said finalizing trade deals is a priority.  “He actually said in one sentence, ‘it is time to work hard on bilateral trade deals that the President wants and a good place to start is with the TPP countries’,” he says.  “That’s the first person I’ve ever heard in this administration that tied those two together.  I thought ‘YES’ alright let’s get to work.”

Roberts says he’s been encouraging the administration to address some of the long-standing trade barriers that hinder exports of US products.  “If they continue to deliver wins like they did on China – and the beef trade,” he says.  “Rest assured our producers and exporters could experience real benefits.  And Lord knows we need that.”

He says technical barriers are still being finalized on the China agreement – but he hopes this time US beef and beef products will be granted true market access.
