Seed treatments still pay off in Upper Midwest

An agronomist maintains seed treatments are still worth the investment for all farmers in wet, cool environments as margins remain tight.

Dan Koehler covers southern Minnesota for Dekalb/Asgrow and says it’s really important crops get off to a good start.

“At a recent grower meeting I was asked about Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) and management practices he can put into his soybean program.  It really starts with variety placement, a good tolerance to Sudden Death Syndrome, but then the next thing is a good seed treatment.”

SDS infects plants through the roots, so Koehler says offering protection in the form of seed treatments usually pays dividends.

“Either VOTiVO or ILeVO are two very good seed treatments that we’ve seen really good response (from).  There’s also some other ones out there.  But let’s not go away from seed treatments, especially up here where the environment is cool and wet around that seed every planting season.”

Koehler recommends growers use previous field history to identify where seed treatments would be most valuable.
