Seed company’s take on herbicide-resistant weeds

The president of an independent seed company says as new technologies hit the market, growers will need to use all available tools to control herbicide-resistant weeds.

Carl Peterson of North Dakota-based Peterson Farms Seed, tells Brownfield resistance is something they’ve been talking about for many years.

“We were the first company in our area to bring Liberty Link to the marketplace because we saw resistant weeds showing up in our customer’s fields and we needed to have an answer.”

He says it’s important for his company to be on the leading edge of the latest herbicide mode-of-action chemistries.

“Liberty is a great option, Xtend is a great option.  The Balance, if the 2, 4-D soybeans come forward here in a year or two.  We’re going to need all the tools we have to control weeds, and we cannot rely on any one technology to make that happen.”

Brownfield spoke to Peterson during a Balance GT field experience tour in central Iowa Friday.
