Scarcity drives innovation

The founder of a business connecting farmers to ag technology entrepreneurs says scarcity drives innovation.

Yogev Moyal grew up in Israel, and served in the Israeli military before moving to the United States to study economics and agriculture at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland.

He tells Brownfield a shortage of water in his home country led to the development of new solutions.

“They improved their irrigation and infrastructure.  And I think the point here is the scarcity that’s created innovation.  And it happens both in agriculture, but also in the military.  The eco-systems are similar in that sense.”

Moyal used his background to help start a fund that helps farmers bring the latest technology to their operations.

“What we do is not to go look for cool ideas in Silicon Valley or Tel Aviv or elsewhere.  What we do is go to the farmers in the fields and ask them what they need.  What are their challenges?  What are the opportunities they see in the market?”

Moyal’s company, AGrow-Ventures, connects farmers with agribusiness professionals and investors.

He will be attending the ROI Summit in Jerusalem this summer, an event that brings together more than 150 ag innovators from around the world.
