Record crop could be coming

A south-central Minnesota farmer has hopes his 2017 crop will eclipse last year’s record.

Scott Dauk grows corn and soybeans east of Mankato and says the season has turned around after a cool, wet start.

“The crops look really good right now (and) could be better than our record crop last year I believe.”

He tells Brownfield recent rain came at a good time.

“We just had three inches of rain last week in about 45 minutes, so I think we’re in really good shape for the rest of the month if we don’t get (really) high temperatures.”

Hauk says he’s about halfway done spraying tasseled corn with a fungicide.

“Mostly preventative.  I usually go through with Headline AMP at full tassel to prevent any diseases that could be upcoming.”

Statewide, Minnesota farmers achieved record corn and soybean yield averages in 2016, surpassing the previous year.
