Reaching out to the Indiana legislature

Protect the Harvest founder Forrest Lucas held a meet and greet at the Indiana Statehouse Thursday.  Their goal?  To educate legislators, farmers, and all Hoosiers about how much damage animal right extremists groups could do to the agriculture industry.  “We’ve got to understand that HSUS is not the Humane Society,” he says.  “It is a lie.  They’re taking all the money and not spending it on animals.  They want to do away with the animals.  They don’t want any pet breeders left.  They want no hunting and no fishing.”

Joining Lucas was Missouri State Senator Mike Parson.  Who shared some of his experiences with ag issues in the Missouri state legislature with Indiana’s legislative body.

One issue in particular is the Right to Farm.  “When you start talking about farming rights and a Right to Farm Bill, I think it’s important, if you can, to keep it simple,” he says.  “Sometimes the more languages, the more groups you try to satisfy with different kinds of language in there, if you’re not careful then sometimes the bill gets awfully heavy.  My suggestion is to keep it simple.  All we want to do is protect people’s ability to farm and ranch.”  The Right to Farm  Constitutional Amendment will appear on the Missouri ballot later this year.

Lucas tells Brownfield it’s important for the legislators to be able to share their experiences.  “They understand how important it is that we all as states and as the population work together to stop the animal rights and environmental extremists,” he says.  “They are coming over as good citizens.  That’s all; just to try to get this message across to everybody.”
