Purdue website aims to educate on GMOs

Purdue University has a new website dedicated to factual information on genetically modified organisms or GMOs.

Jay Akridge, Dean of the Purdue College of Agriculture says the site – called The Science of GMOs – is designed to be an educational resource for the public.

“We just decided that there’s areas where we need to be more active in terms of providing information and educational resources so that consumers and the broader public could better understand the science and the state of the art today,” says Akridge.

Akridge tells Brownfield the website answers many questions around GMOs – such as what they are, how they are regulated, and if they cause harm to animals and humans. He says the website focuses on scientific fact rather than advocacy and feedback from the public has been positive.

“To this point, I’ve not gotten a lot of criticism of the site itself, we intend to make it dynamic and as people question why we have a certain answer or if they have a new question they want answered we want to revisit how we are trying to explain here these ideas in as straight forward of a way as we can,” says Akridge.

The Science of GMO’s is an educational effort funded by Purdue University.
