Protecting conservation practices

The president of the Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts says innovations helping to preserve soil health is one of the most exciting areas of today’s conservation practices.

Indiana farmer Jamie Scott says it all starts with the soil.  “We talk about clean water – the Gulf of Mexico, the Great Lakes issue and soil health and cover crops are part of the fix to those problems,” he says.  “They are voluntarily implemented by farmers here in Indiana.”

He tells Brownfield as Farm Bill discussions heat up – so will the fight to preserve conservation funding.

But, Scott says it doesn’t matter who is in charge – conservation is something that everyone should support.  “It shouldn’t really matter for Republican, Democrat – or whatever,” he says.  “It is something for every one of us that we live around every day.  We should forget about that (party) and focus on conservation here in Indiana.”

Scott spoke to Brownfield at the recent IASWCD Annual Meeting in Indianapolis.
