Prestage reversal still a hot issue in North Iowa

Reversal on a proposed pork processing plant in northern Iowa remains a polarizing event for the area.

North-central Iowa pork producer Larry Sailer says the controversy surrounding Prestage Farms looking to build a pork processing plant near Mason City and the ensuing public outcry that lead to Prestage officials moving the project to Eagle Grove is still a very hot issue.

“Just the fact that the packing plant didn’t go away, it just moved about 50 miles.  And the perception is that we’re going to build a lot more facilities, which is actually a good thing.  It’s good for our economy, it’s more jobs.”

Sailer tells Brownfield he believes misconceptions about agriculture were at the heart of public opposition to the Mason City plant.

“We go out there and do our job, tell (consumers) what we do.  Usually it turns out good, we just have to keep after it.”

He says the Prestage Fresh Pork Processing Plant in Eagle Grove—scheduled to begin operations in the fall of 2018—will join other new processing plants across the country to help improve the price of hogs.

Brownfield interviewed Sailer at the annual Iowa Farm Bureau Meeting in Des Moines Wednesday.
