Prestage picks Wright Co., Iowa for new pork plant

A North Carolina company says it’s found an alternate location for a pork processing plant in Iowa. Prestage Foods will build its new, state-of-the-art facility in north-central Iowa’s Wright County.

Prestage Foods had been looking at other sites since the City Council in Mason City, Iowa failed to approve a development agreement with the company. The council sided with opponents who were concerned about environmental issues and an influx of workers to the area.

Wright County Economic Development Director Bryce Davis says the $240 million pork processing plant will be a $43 million boost to the payroll of Wright County and will have economic benefits in the surrounding counties.

Construction is slated for this fall, pending approval, with operations to begin in mid-2018. Prestage Foods hopes to slaughter as many as 10-thousand animals a day and expects to employ about 900 workers.
