Young people involved in showing livestock are being reminded changes are coming through the Veterinary Feed Directive beginning January first.

Minnesota Pork Producers Association president David Preisler says time is running out for 4-H and FFA members to get familiar with the VFD.

“I think the most important thing first of all is to really know the health status of the pig that they’re purchasing, and work with the farm they are purchasing those show pigs from.”

He tells Brownfield a relationship with a veterinarian is strongly encouraged.

“And this is regardless of if this is a pig project, show steer, lambs, or anything…to where if something does happen health-wise with that project, the vet is there to work with them and make sure they stay fully within the law.”

Preisler says the Pork Checkoff website offers an online tool to assist in locating local veterinarians.
