Portman supports modernizing NAFTA

Senator Rob Portman addresses Ohio Farm Bureau leaders in Washington D.C.

An Ohio Senator says the US needs to modernize trade agreements and expand Ag markets.

Ohio Senator Rob Portman says he’s in favor of updating the North American Free Trade Agreement. In remarks to Ohio Farm Bureau leaders Wednesday, Portman said the agreement was made before e-commerce revolutionized world markets.

Portman says Ohio exports have grown significantly since NAFTA was finalized and today, one in three planted acres in Ohio are exported. If the US is revisiting trade agreements, he says it will need to get serious about expanding export markets to keep American farmers competitive in the world market.

He says representatives from Mexico have indicated they are open to revisiting and modernizing NAFTA.
