Pork export sales up on week

The USDA reports corn, soybean, and wheat export sales for the week ending February 16th were above what’s needed to meet USDA projections for the 2016/17 marketing year.

Wheat came out at 451,300 tons (16.6 million bushels), down 14% from the week ending February 9th and 23% lower than the four week average. Japan purchased 98,800 tons and Algeria bought 82,600 tons, but unknown destinations canceled on 144,600 tons. For the 2016/17 marketing year, wheat sales are 896.1 million bushels, compared to 649.7 million in 2015/16. Sales of 256,500 tons (9.4 million bushels) for 2017/18 delivery were mainly to Mexico (97,000 tons) and the Dominican Republic (58,000 tons).

Corn was reported at 743,100 tons (29.3 million bushels), 5% less than the previous week and 30% under the four week average. Japan picked up 449,000 tons and Colombia purchased 92,900 tons, but unknown destinations canceled on 190,800 tons. At this point in the marketing year, corn sales are 1.682 billion bushels, compared to 1.045 billion this time last year. Sales of 264,500 tons (10.4 million bushels) for 2017/18 delivery were to Japan (204,500 tons) and Mexico (60,000 tons).

Sorghum sales were 86,000 tons (3.4 million bushels), a decrease of 36% from the week before, but an increase of 24% from the four week average. China bought 58,000 tons and Mexico picked up 33,000 tons, while unknown destinations canceled on 5,000 tons. Sorghum sales are 136.6 million bushels, compared to 250.0 million a year ago.

Soybeans were pegged at 413,500 tons (15.2 million bushels), down 54% from the prior week and 32% lower than the four week average. China purchased 274,900 tons and the Netherlands bought 153,200 tons, but unknown destinations canceled on 323,000 tons. So far this marketing year, soybean sales are 1.916 billion bushels, compared to 1.539 billion last year. Sales of 28,700 tons (1.1 million bushels) for 2017/18 delivery were to Mexico (24,000 tons) and Japan (4,700 tons).

Soybean meal came out at 223,000 tons, significantly more than the previous week, but 16% less than the four week average. Thailand picked up 49,500 tons and Mexico purchased 39,800 tons, while Venezuela canceled on 6,000 tons. Cumulative soybean meal sales are 7,320,900 tons, compared to 7,326,700 a year ago. Sales of 7,700 tons for 2017/18 delivery were to Guatemala (7,500 tons) and Canada (200 tons).

Soybean oil was reported at 12,700 tons, 29% above the week before, but 52% below the four week average. Mexico bought 7,300 tons and the Dominican Republic picked up 3,000 tons. 2016/17 soybean oil sales are 720,600 tons, compared to 628,700 in 2015/16.

Net beef sales totaled 10,400 tons, down 22% on the week and 41% lower than the four week average. The listed purchasers were Mexico (2,000 tons), Japan (1,900 tons), Canada (1,500 tons), Hong Kong (1,400 tons), and South Korea (1,300 tons).

Net pork sales totaled 20,800 tons, 12% more than the prior week, but 11% less than the four week average. The reported buyers were Mexico (9,400 tons), South Korea (3,000 tons), Japan (2,800 tons), Hong Kong (2,600 tons), and Canada (1,200 tons).
