Pipestone prepares to open Wisconsin sow facility

Pipestone’s Blake’s Point facility prepares for its first sows

A new pork production facility will open next month in southwestern Wisconsin.  Blake’s Point Sow Farm is part of Pipestone System, which has more than a dozen hog farms in Minnesota, Missouri, Iowa, and South Dakota.

Dr. Barry Kerkaert, VP-Pipestone Systems

Pipestone Vice President Dr. Barry Kerkaert tells Brownfield Blake’s Point is the company’s first Wisconsin farm and will play a key role for the other farms. “The purpose of this farm is really like the maternity ward of production.  It’s where all of the mama sows have their babies.  They’re raised up to about fourteen pounds and then they’re hauled away to the farms where they will be grown up to 280 pounds.”

He says the new facility is built to protect the health of the animals and staff.  “When all of the folks come in, they shower into the farm every day, they work in the farm, and when they go home, they get to shower out.  We really guard the biosecurity of the farm.”

The first 3,000 gilts are to be delivered to the farm March 13th.
