Perdue responds to concerns over possible NAFTA withdrawal

There’s growing concern in the ag industry that the Trump Administration is positioning itself to withdraw from the North American Free Trade Agreement.

At a Monday news conference in Omaha, Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue was asked about those concerns.

“Well, the President has a unique negotiating style,” Perdue said. “Obviously, I believe that his instincts are great in the past, based on his own success, and we are continuing to educate the administration over the benefits of agreements like NAFTA from an agricultural perspective.”

Perdue says he’s confident of a positive outcome.

“I think the President is willing to fight for America in a way that gets the best deal for America,” he says, “and I believe, at the end of the day, that’s what will happen.”

According to TheHill.com, Trump repeated his threat to withdraw from NAFTA during a recent meeting with Republican senators. He told them the U.S. may need to start the six-month NAFTA withdrawal process to reach a better agreement with Canada and Mexico.
