Panel discusses farm employee hiring and retention

A dairy farm manager says making good employees a part of the farm’s future helps retain those workers.  Andrea Brossard co-manages Brossard Dairy Farm near Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.  “One employer talked about how when they sit down with them at the review, they not only set their own personal goals but they also come up with ideas for goals for the farm operation and where they see the farm going as a whole, which I think is an awesome idea because it gives them some stake in the operation.”

Brossard talked about employee retention on a panel at the Wisconsin Ag Women’s Summit. She recommends having an exit interview with good employees who are leaving to understand why they are leaving.  “They’re leaving for reasons that may be out of my control like their family might be leaving or they’re advancing in school, or things of that nature that are kind of something you can’t even correct necessarily as an employer.”

Brossard says one of the most important things farm managers can do is to ask the right questions and let potential new employees know what the goals are during the interview process. She says once someone is hired, keep the lines of communication open and offer additional training where needed.
