The Ohio state veterinarian says producers who have medicated feed before January 1st will need to use that feed or discard it once the Veterinary Feed Directive goes into effect.

Dr. Tony Forshey.

“Any feed that doesn’t have a VFD after January 1st will not be allowed to be fed. Even feed that has been produced under a VFD that has been expired will have to be discarded as well. So there’s no carry-over,” says Forshey.

Dr. Forshey tells Brownfield any livestock animal consuming medicated feed, regardless if the animal is raised for consumption or not, will have to be fed according to the veterinary feed directive guidelines.

“Even beekeepers if they’re using antibiotics routinely, they’ll have to have a veterinary-client patient relationship as well,” says Forshey.

Dr. Forshey says animals who need medicated water will also have to have prescriptions filled out by a vet before they can be medicated.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture will be holding two informational seminars next week for farmers, vets and animal producers to learn about the veterinary feed directive. The seminars will be on Thursday November 10th from 9am till noon and 1pm till 4pm. They are free and open to the public. To register, visit the Ohio Department of Agriculture online.
