OSHA cites KC Grain company for deaths

A Kansas City grain company has been cited by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) for an explosion last October that killed six men who worked at its Atchison, Kansas grain elevator. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis – in announcing the citations against Bartlett Grain Company on Thursday – said the deaths could have been prevented if the company had addressed well known hazards in the grain storage industry, adding that the company showed a willful disregard for the law, especially in the handling of grain dust.

The president of Bartlett Grain told the Kansas City Star that they strongly disagree with OSHA’s findings – and – pointed out that the cause of the explosion is still undetermined.

OSHA proposes $406-thousand dollars in fines against Bartlett Grain. Also cited is the Kansas Grain Inspection Service, a contractor employed by Bartlett for related violations and $67,500 in proposed fines. KGIS tells the Star that it strongly disagrees with OSHA and will contest the proposed fines.
