Ontario’s Ag Minister says ag trade is a two way street with the U.S.

The Ontario Minister of Agriculture is reinforcing the importance of ag trade relationships between border states ahead of NAFTA negotiations.

Jeff Leal tells Brownfield it’s important to establish personal relationships between the two countries and his six-state trade mission has emphasized the benefits of trade on both sides of the border.  “We’ve got to impress upon our political leadership, whether it’s in Ottawa or in Washington, that any thickening of the border presents great challenges on both sides–particularly for agricultural products where just-in-time deliveries are so very important in terms of freshness and quality.”

Leal says the relationship between Canada and the U.S. is envied around the globe and other countries look to the two nations for high standards and cordial behavior which has enhanced prosperity significantly for both.

Leal visited with Wisconsin ag leaders a few weeks ago and made his second stop in Michigan and Ohio Thursday. He plans to also travel to Pennsylvania, Illinois, Missouri and New York in the coming weeks.
