Online service helps poultry producers respond to avian influenza

A poultry disease specialist has designed an online tool to help producers who are faced with avian influenza.

Dr. Carol Cardona with the University of Minnesota says the service helps producers navigate through the regulations following an outbreak.

“It helps them register for DUNS and SAM’s numbers for example. Those are the numbers you need to be indemnified. It helps them figure out what kind of space they’d need for certain kinds of disposal processes, it helps them to figure out what lab to take their samples to,” says Cardona.

She tells Brownfield the goal of the service is to provide peace of mind to producers who are impacted by avian influenza.

“That was something that [we found] was really hard on people. Not only having this happen to them, having this infection but also not being able to understand what all this whole response was about. This provides a way for people to understand that,” says Cardona.

Cardona says the service is free, however right now it is only available in Minnesota. A nationwide service is under development and will be available to producers this fall.

Last month, the southeastern United States was hit with several cases of high path AI that authorities say were linked to migrating wild birds. Though some authorities believe the threat has subsided, they say producers should continue to monitor their flocks and report any spikes in illness or death.
