Obama signs GMO labeling law
President Obama signed the bipartisan GMO labeling bill into law today. The law stops Vermont’s state GMO labeling law – that would have required on-package labels – from going into effect and sets a national mandatory disclosure standard for bioengineered foods in every state.
Grocery Manufacturers Association president-and-CEO Pamela Bailey says the law “opens a new era for transparency in ingredient information for consumers.” She says their ‘innovative’ “SmartLabel” initiative puts information right at consumers’ fingertips and more than 34-thousand products are expected to be online with it by 2018.
The USDA will begin its rule-making process to implement the new GMO labeling law and the Grocery Manufacturers Association says it will assist the agency in that effort.
