Nebraska’s governor issues declaration on avian flu
Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts has signed a state of emergency declaration to make sure state agencies have what they need to battle avian influenza in the state.
Nebraska agriculture director Greg Ibach says the declaration will give his agency additional resources to respond to the disease outbreak.
Earlier this week, officials confirmed the presence of the H5N2 avian flu virus in a flock of 1.7 million egg laying hens in Dixon County in northeast Nebraska. Several agencies are working to quarantine the farm where the disease was found and carry out the destruction of the infected birds.
Officials say the avian flu doesn’t represent a significant health risk to humans.
