Nebraska reports its first case of avian flu

eggsA flock of 1.7 million egg laying hens in Dixon County in northeast Nebraska has been infected with the highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza (HPAI) virus.

It’s the first case of the disease reported in Nebraska.  The virus has devastated turkey and egg operations in Minnesota and Iowa.

Nebraska director of agriculture Greg Ibach says his department is working closely with the U.S. Department of Agriculture on the situation.  Ibach says the farm has been quarantined and the birds on the property will be depopulated. He says the department of agriculture will work with Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality to ensure proper disposal of dead birds.
