Nebraska official says some Canadians welcome NAFTA renegotiation

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts and the Nebraska trade delegation met Wednesday with Ontario International Trade Minister Michael Chan and other Canadian government officials.

Canada’s government and farmers might be satisfied with the new Class 7 milk price system, but there’s another part of the Canadian dairy industry that supports the renegotiation of NAFTA.

Nebraska ag director Greg Ibach says some Canadian food processors welcome the NAFTA talks, which start next Wednesday.

“They support some of the positions of the United States as far as being able to bring in some additional product—especially in dairy—that would be affordable and bring more competition into the marketplace,” Ibach says.

Ibach is part of a Nebraska trade mission to Canada, and says NAFTA negotiations are a big discussion topic in their meetings with Canadian business leaders.
