Lincoln Premium Poultry, the company in charge of logistics for the proposed Costco chicken processing plant in Fremont, Nebraska, continues to meet with farmers who have interest in growing chickens for the company.

“We continue to see a lot of interest and a lot of folks moving forward in signing applications,” says project manager Walt Shafer says. “We’re very pleased with the response we’re getting at this point.”

Shafer says they will need 100 to 125 growers with commitments to build 400 poultry houses.

“It’s just an excellent opportunity to bring the kids home to the farm, or keep them on the farm,” he says. “It’s really a great opportunity to stabilize that farm income that’s been very variable, especially the last few years.”

Shafer has indicated they would like to break ground on the plant sometime this spring. He says securing the necessary grower commitments is one of the final steps in the process.

“I hope one of these days here, very shortly, I can tell you that we’re getting ready to break ground and start this adventure that we’re going on.”

As proposed, the plant will process two million broilers per week.
