NCBA leader says there still work to do on a CFAP3

A leader with the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association says they expect additional aid for cattle producers from a Coronavirus Food Assistance Program 3 in the next couple of months.

Ethan Lane, vice president of government affairs, says the USDA has a set of rules and regulations they must follow before the assistance can be distributed.  “Give then fact that the original CFAP last spring took about 30 to 45 days, I would say that’s probably the earliest you can expect to see any additional payments for cattle producers,” he says.  “It’s going to take them a little bit of time to get them through the process.”

Lane says this next round of payments would be “top up” payments and target producers who were in limbo from April 15th to May 15th.  “That arbitrary cutoff date the USDA put in the CFAP1 program left a lot of our producers with the worst of the losses, with price environment, because of the restriction in processing capacity, because of all of the issues we’ve all talked about over the past year, but without the same level of direct payment as other producers,” he says.

Lane made his comments during the NCBA’s Winter Reboot meeting held virtually this week.
