NCBA doesn’t want COOL to resurface in NAFTA

National Cattlemen’s Beef Association doesn’t want Country-of-Origin-Labeling in a renewed NAFTA agreement. NCBA CEO Kendal Frazier, who testified at a recent House Ag Committee hearing, told lawmakers his organization strongly opposes any attempts to use NAFTA as a vehicle to resurrect failed past policies, “COOL was a U.S. law for over six years and failed to deliver on its promises to build consumer confidence and add value to our products. Instead, COOL resulted in a long battle at the World Trade Organization with the United States facing the promise of more than $1-Billion in retaliatory tariffs from Mexico and Canada unless COOL was repealed.”

Frazier testified that Canada and Mexico still have the authority to retaliate against the U.S. if COOL returns, and that they will if necessary. NAFTA renegotiations are set to begin August 16th. Frazier says NCBA wants the administration to build on the success that current NAFTA provisions have given U.S. beef producers and “do no harm.”

  • The difference here is NCBA doesn’t care about small American ranchers and farmers or the fact that more and more Americans want to know where their food is coming from and how it is being raised/grown.
