National Milk hopes for milk labeling changes under Gottlieb

The National Milk Producers Federation hopes the Food and Drug Administration cracks down on non-dairy products using the term “milk” now that Dr. Scott Gottlieb has been confirmed as the FDA Commissioner.

National Milk’s President and CEO Jim Mulhern issued a statement after Gottlieb’s Tuesday Senate confirmation saying he wants to work with the new FDA Commissioner to stop what he called, “bureaucratic inertia” hindering progress on food labeling and other issues.

National Milk has been unsuccessful so far in getting the FDA to require different labels on imitation milk products, saying the FDA’s own guidelines require milk to come from a mammal and not plants.  Almond and soy milk manufacturers say the label changes are unnecessary.
