National Farmers Market Week celebrated

This is the 18th year for celebrating national farmers market week. U.S. Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue issued a proclamation to recognize them all this week.  Dru Montri, director of the Michigan Farmers Market Association, tells Brownfield the number continues to grow across the U.S., helping local economies, “Farmers markets and other direct marketing outlets, so that could be community supported agriculture outlets or on-farm markets, are contributing approximately $9-Billion each year to the U.S. economy. And, that’s a growing number and I think a really important number to point out that farmers markets are really vital to communities all across this nation.”

Montri says they are hearing of more farmers adding new revenue streams through farmers markets, as a way to improve their incomes in the down ag economy, “So, I think it’s a really good opportunity for people who need to diversify their revenue stream and there is certainly a demand at farmers markets for more producers.” There are more than 8,600 markets listed in the USDA farmers market directory in 2016.

Dru Montri is also on the National Farmers Market Coalition board of directors.
