NAFTA renegotiation might benefit U.S. wheat industry

The National Association of Wheat Growers says there are improvement opportunities for wheat trade while renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement.  NAWG CEO Chandler Goule says wheat growers and buyers can benefit from some enhancements to NAFTA.  He says it’s important that sanitary and phytosanitary rules are transparent and science-based.  Goule says with the push to reduce tariffs, non-tariff barriers, especially sanitary and phytosanitary trade barriers are becoming more common.  Sanitary and phytosanitary rules were already agreed on by the U.S., Mexico and Canada during Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations.

He says another area in need of improvement is Canada’s grading system for U.S. wheat.  He says Canadian wheat in U.S. elevators receives a grade commensurate to its quality, but U.S. wheat in Canadian elevators is automatically downgraded to a ‘feed wheat’ grade or the equivalent.
