Moving cattle to higher ground

The cow/calf chairman of the Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association says recent wet weather is causing problems for many producers.

Grant Breitkreutz of Redwood Falls tells Brownfield rain over the past ten days has prompted the movement of cattle to higher ground.

“We’ve all been moving cattle constantly.  We’ve had to take them off of pastures where we still have grass, but it’s so wet the cattle are actually cutting through the grass (which) we know will hurt it.  It’s a struggle statewide.”

He’s concerned saturated conditions could lead to what he calls an environmental deficit.

“We’re trying to not do damage to our winter feed yards or our summer pastures, so it’s just a matter of trying to find a good, dry (and) stable place to move cattle to.”

Brownfield spoke to Breitkreutz at the Minnesota Cattle Industry Convention in Bloomington Friday.
