Montana judge hears beef checkoff arguments
A federal court in Billings, Montana heard arguments this week in a beef checkoff lawsuit brought by the cattle organization R-CALF.
R-CALF argues that its members are forced to help fund beef promotions by the Montana Beef Council with which they do not agree. The group says its members are not given a say in how those promotions are constructed and claims government oversight of the checkoff is lacking.
One of the group’s main concerns is that those promotions do not distinguish between domestic and foreign beef.
The judge’s ruling is expected soon.
