Missouri Lt. Gov. candidates spar over agriculture

The candidates for Lieutenant Governor of Missouri sparred over agriculture issues at a live forum on Brownfield Ag News on Monday.

Democrat Russ Carnahan, a former US Congressman for Missouri, said he wishes his opponent, Republican Mike Parsons would “stand up to outside groups”, saying “I don’t think that’s what most Missouri folks feel is a good thing for Missouri to increase the amount of farmland that can be owned by foreign interests and open for the door for foreign companies, Chinese companies in particular, to expand industrial, factory farming in this state.”

Parson, who is a member of the Missouri Senate Agriculture Committee, shot back, calling the former Congressman a “Washington, DC bureaucrat” and saying “He doesn’t even understand what he’s talking about. I actually prevented foreign ownership in the state of Missouri, regulated it where they couldn’t own any more land than 1% in the state of Missouri. So this is just another typical smoke and screen that you try to throw out at somebody.”

In addition, Parson said he has fought his entire legislative career to keep the animal rights lobbying group, the Humane Society of the United States, from trying to shut down animal agriculture in Missouri. Carnahan has been endorsed by that group’s lobbying arm, the Humane Society Legislative Fund.
