Missouri grower staying the course

West Central Missouri farmer Billy Thiel says he’s not changing his corn and soybean rotation much this year, which is always a little stronger on corn.

Thiel spoke with Brownfield last week and he’s hoping for a few weeks of rain before planting because the ground has been dry — which HAS helped him get a lot of field work done.

Thiel says he didn’t make any major management changes in 2016 when crops did really well but prices were low, as they still are…

“Actually, the fertilizer prices went down so we didn’t really cut back a whole lot on that. We’ll probably just see how the weather goes all summer, see if we change any management during that time, if it dries up on us.”

The insurance date for planting in his area is April first.
