Missouri FFA hosts food packing event
Highlighting a summer-long service effort to combat childhood food insecurity and showcase Missouri agriculture, Missouri FFA Association hosted a food packing event at Missouri State Fair Tuesday, August 15, 2017.
More than 350 Missouri FFA members along with Missouri Farmers Care Drive to Feed Kids presenting sponsors packed 50,000 meals for Feeding Missouri’s member food banks.
Scott Baker, State Director of Feeding Missouri tells Brownfield that many people think of inner cities when they think of food insecurity, but, the worse counties are in rural Missouri. Events such as the one held at Missouri State Fair are an example of neighbors helping neighbors.
Baker said this might not be the most successful year but it is the most hopeful year for Feeding Missouri because agriculture has pulled together to address food insecurity in rural counties. He said Missouri farmers do a great job of feeding the world and through the Drive to Feed Kids, he’s seen them really “walk the walk” to feed hungry children in their own communities.
Missouri Director of Agriculture Chris Chinn, former director Richard Fordyce, and Monsanto President Brett Begeman and Missouri Farmers Care President and Vice President of MFA Dr. Alan Wessler were among the volunteers packing meals.
